Banana Appam



  • Wheat flour  -1 cup (Can take 3/4 cup wheat flour and 1/4 cup rice flour)

  • Jaggery syrup - 1/4 cup 

  • Ghee  - 1 tbsp

  • Cardamom seeds(crushed) -  1 tsp

  • Ripe Banana - 2

  • Grated coconut - 1-2 tbsp

  • Cashew nuts - 5-6 no:s

  • Raisins - few



  • To make Jaggery Syrup:

    • 1/4 cup jaggery​

    • 1 cup of water 

    • Boil jaggery and water till jaggery dissolves.

    • Strain and keep aside.

  • Add ghee to a pan. fry cashew nuts till its lightly browned. Fry raisins. Keep both aside

  • To the same pan add rest of the ghee and saute banana slices to it. when it's soft, add coconut. once sauteed(no need to brown the coconut, just till the water is dried)

  • In a bowl, take one cup of Wheat flour. Add a pinch of salt and crushed cardamom seeds.

  • Pour jaggery syrup and add the sauteed banana-coconut mix. 

  • Mix well. (consistency will be of idli batter)

  • Pour the batter to a well-oiled steel mould to steam(steel plates or idli moulds can be used)

  • In a steamer, steam the Appam for 15-20 minutes.

  • After 15-20 minutes, take the appam out of the steamer. Let it cool off a little.

  • cut it into desired shapes and serve.
